Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- discuss the scientific basis of the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative and recognize the importance of research results to realistic implementation of BFHI in Canada;
- understand the role of hormones in the development of the mammary gland and the implications of hormonal imbalances (diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, prolactin problems) in insufficient milk production;
- discuss reasons why many women in Canada have difficulties breastfeeding and identify optimal perinatal practices for the initiation of breastfeeding;
- identify the processes that affect breast development and milk supply, identify risk factors for milk supply problems, and develop strategies to counsel women;
- discuss the individual profiles, research and clinical experience for some of the most popular reputed galactagogue herbs and products;
- discuss the importance of uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby at birth, especially for breastfeeding;
- identify real or perceived insufficient milk supply and discuss pregnancy, environmental, postpartum, maternal medical/physical/hormonal and infant factors which may contribute;
- understand the results of a Swedish study on ‘hands-on’ teaching of breastfeeding in a NICU and discuss mothers’ perceptions of this technique.
Speakers:
Louise Dumas BSN, MSN,PhD
Louise is professor-researcher in Nursing Sciences focused on perinatal practices, breastfeeding, and patient education. As guest researcher at the Department of Women and Child Health at the Karolinska Institute, Louise is part of a Russian-Swedish-Canadian research team specifically studying Russian swaddling and mother-infant separation at birth. Louise is a Lead Assessor for the Baby-Friendly Initiative and one of the three Canadian representatives to the WHO committee of BFHI for industrialized countries. Louise is well published and has presented at many conferences throughout the world.
Lisa Marasco MA, IBCLC,FILCA
Lisa holds a Master’s degree in Human Development with specialization in Lactation. She has published several articles and co-authored with Diana West a comprehensive
book entitled “The Breastfeeding Mother’s Guide to Making More Milk” (Oct 2009). Lisa is employed by WIC of Santa Barbara County and maintains a private practice, Expressly Yours Lactation Services. Lisa is an Associate Area Professional Liaison for La Leche League of Southern California and Nevada, and serves on the Breastfeeding Coalition of Santa Barbara County, California

The goal of the INFACT Canada/IBFAN North America breastfeeding course is to provide participants with the information and resources required to support breastfeeding. After completing the course, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of optimal infant feeding practices, current research and best practices in breastfeeding, the need to protect breastfeeding through the implementation of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, and other key initiatives such as the WHO recommendations for exclusive breastfeeding for six months.
