 Petition to The Legislative Assembly of Ontario

RECOGNIZING that Health Canada, the Canadian Pediatric Society and the World Health Organization, recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, after which nutrient rich family foods are gradually introduced with sustained breastfeeding to two years and beyond to achieve optimal health;

RECOGNIZING the substantial scientific evidence of the importance of breastfeeding for mothers and children for optimal growth, development and health; the ensuing financial benefits to our health care system; the societal benefits of a healthy population;

CONCERNED that breastfeeding rates and supports needed to achieve improved breastfeeding rates are far from optimal;

REAFFIRMING that governments are signatories to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and hence obligated to support breastfeeding to,  “achieve the highest attainable standard of health”, it is incumbent upon our provincial government to implement policies and institutional supports to ensure that mothers and babies receive the support for recommended breastfeeding practices;

WHEREAS the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant is the recognized professional to provide qualified help and support to breastfeeding mothers and their children;

 AND WHEREAS the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant has been recognized worldwide as an integral part of the healthcare team in ensuring mothers are supported to breastfeed as recommended;

WE ARE URGING the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to take a leadership role in ensuring that mothers and children in Ontario be supported to breastfeed by recognizing the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant as a Healthcare Professional in the Province of Ontario.
